UK-based Kashmiri group splits

LONDON: A UK based Kashmiri nationalist group has split in two factions after its leaders engaged in a war of words. President of Kashmir National Party, Mohammad Nazim Bhatti, said in a statement to this paper that he had “expelled basic membership of Dr Shabir Chaudhry from KNP”, also barring him from “using the name of any institution of the organization”.

Bhatti alleged that “Dr Chaudhry was involved in damaging the struggle of Kashmiris and ideology of Independent Kashmir” after Dr Chaudhry’s name was mentioned by Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front chief, Yasin Malik, during the memogate hearing. Bhatti claimed that he was taking this step to “protect the constitution and the reputation of the party”.

But Abbas Butt, Chairman of KNP, told The News/Jang that Nazim Bhatti was a member of “KNP as Zonal President” and has no authority to dismiss Dr Shabir Chaudhry as a member of the KNP.

“This is because Dr Shabir Chaudhry is the Chairman of the Diplomatic Committee and member of central committee and as per the constitution of KNP a zonal president has no such authority. At present Nazim Bhatti is not even basic member of KNP, how he can take such action. This right lies with the Chairman and the Central Committee Members alone.”KNP was formed in 2008 by veteran UK based Kashmiri nationalists who had previously worked with Amanullah Khan and Yasin Malik. http://www.thenews.com.pk/Todays-News-2-101280-UK-based-Kashmiri-group-splits
