report in The Island, June 19, 2023
The Reconciliation Commission (TRC) draft is to be shared with the diplomatic community and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) by next month. Thereafter, it will be submitted to Parliament for consideration. Minister of Justice Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has said that once the TRC draft receives parliamentary approval, it will be implemented by December 2023.
This development comes in anticipation of the 53rd regular sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which are set to commence tomorrow. The United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner, Volker Türk will deliver an oral update on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.
Previously, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a joint-Cabinet memorandum on a Truth and Reconciliation mechanism, based on South Africa’s model of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The memorandum was presented by Minister Rajapakshe and Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry on 29 May. The two Ministers recently visited South Africa to study the workings of the mechanism.
