New Bribery Commission appointed after delay over differences

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed Justice Neil Iddawala, retired Judge of the Appeal Court, as the Chairman of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and two other members of the Commission, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

The other members are Chethiya Goonesekera PC, previously in the Attorney-General’s Department and K. Bernard Rajapakse, a former DGM of the People’s Bank. The appointments are with effect from January 1, 2024.

Goonesekera had been the Senior Deputy Solicitor General (Administration) of the Department of Attorney General and Rajapakse been a former Senior Deputy General Manager of the People’s Bank. He had also been the President of Association of Professional Bankers from 2021 to 2022.

He’s an alumnus of Universities of Sri Jayewardenepura and Kelaniya and the Sri Lanka Law College and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. Differences between the Constitutional Council and the Executive, now resolved, held up the appointments.
