Transporters warn of halting supplies to GB

BISHAM: The transporters in Shangla district have threatened to stop supplies of goods to Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) after the driver of a truck and his son were shot and injured by unknown persons in Sikandarabad area near Gilgit town.

Addressing a press conference, president of the transporters union, Gul Muhammad, said that unknown gunmen in Gigit-Baltistan have killed over 10 drivers and their helpers in the last few weeks.

He added in the recent incident driver Humayun and his son Faizan, residents of Abbottabad, were seized from the truck by masked gunmen in Sikandarabad and sprayed with bullets. He said both sustained critical injuries and were under treatment at a local hospital.

He said before this incident two drivers including one Mukhtiar were abducted and tortured in the Skardu area. However, he said they escaped from the captivity of the kidnappers and reached home safely.

He said the Gilgit-Baltistan government had promised them security in writing, yet protection was not provided. He added that several drivers and their helpers belonging to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been killed in Gilgit-Baltistan.
