Strike in GB against 2009 order

GILGIT, May 8: A shutter down strike was observed on Tuesday in Gilgit and some other towns on the call of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jammat (ASWJ) to demand repeal of the Empowerment and Self Governance Order 2009.

The ASWJ claims that the order was passed to facilitate certain segments of the society.

On the occasion, the government had suspended cell phone service and all government and private schools and offices remained closed. Hospitals were also closed and people faced great difficulty in finding life saving medicines due to closure of markets. Traffic remained off the road.

The administration of Gilgit had adopted elaborated security measures to avoid any untoward incident.

Similarly, the strike was observed in Chilas, Darel, Tangir, Astor, Gahkuch and some other parts where people protested against the imposition of the order and termed it benefited a particular sect.

Talking to reporters, chief of the ASWJ Qazi Nisar Ahmed said the executive order passed in 2009 was tantamount to weakening six decades old stance of Pakistan on Kashmir.http://dawn.com/2013/05/09/strike-in-gb-against-2009-order/
