Sri Lanka’s Higher Education Ministry is to introduce new regulations and a hotline for tips against bullying, or ragging, in universities, an official said.
“Minister for Higher Education Suren Raghavan has introduced an advisory committee consisting of main institutions, the Ministry, Sri Lanka Police, Ministry of Defense, Presidential Secretariat and the Human Rights Commission,” Secretary to the Minister of Higher Education, Dilshan Jayakody told EconomyNext today (18).
The ministry said that the commission has requested the establishment of a hotline to report bullying.
This hotline has been established by the Sri Lanka Police and operates on WhatsApp.
The ministry said that any photos and videos taken of bullying can be shared through this number.
In June 2023, eleven students were suspended from the University of Peradeniya for bullying first-year students.
“If there is an incident at a particular university, the nearest Police station should be informed,” Jayakody said.
“If not, the university has to be responsible. It does not just apply to State universities, but to private universities such as CINEC and Charted Accountants as well.
