report in The Island, Dec 17, 2022
Ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has indicated that it was ready to consider contesting the next election, under a new symbol.
Having obtained the Election Commission recognition in 2016, the SLPP won the 2018 Local Government polls, the 2019 Presidential, and the 2020 General Election, under its own symbol Pohottuwa (Lotus bud).
Chief Government Whip, Prasanna Ranatunga, on Thursday (15), said that the SLPP would contest the next election, under a new alliance, and their symbol would be decided later.
The Urban Development and Housing Minister said so, responding to the media, at an event held at Battaramulla. Asked whether the SLPP would form an alliance with the UNP, Minister Ranatunga described the incumbent administration as a Wickremesinghe-Rajapaksa government.
Declaring that there was no issue in forming an alliance with the UNP, the SLPP Gampaha District strongman said that they were also in discussion with several other parties https://island.lk/slpp-unp-alliance-certainty-prasanna/
