By Maqbool Malik

ISLAMABAD – High command of the ruling PPP is in a fix in finding a suitable female candidate for appointment as first governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, sources informed TheNation on Monday.
The sources disclosed that PPP leadership has interviewed a few women members of the newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly but none of them could qualify the set out criteria for the gubernatorial slot.
The sources were of the view that this has forced the party leadership to pick a party loyalist for the slot from other provinces of the country.
The sources maintained that new move has also not born fruits so far because of dearth of female candidates to qualify for the proposed position. PPP MPs of the G-B Assembly have sent new proposals opposing the idea of a female governor.
They have already rejected nomination of Ameer Sheikh Jan, a nominee of JUI (F) Amir Fazlur Rehman for the prized slot.
The sources were of the view that these developments might compel President Zardari to change his mind.
In a related development, the PML-N has also stepped up efforts to prevail upon PPP leadership to consider the nomination of wife of Ameer of Hunza, Rani Attia, for the slot who is emerging as most suitable person for the job. Rani Attia is very well conversed with the governance issues as she enjoys more than 30 years of experience working for different positions in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The sources informed she was first elected women in the then Northern Areas Council and has also served as executive member of the first women commission set up in 2000, in addition to key role making the Karakorum University, Gilgit, a reality.
However she could not be contacted for her comments till filing of this report.
