Peace in GB to remain a challenge unless killers held: Wattoo

ISLAMABAD: A delegation of Gilgit-Baltistan Council met Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Mian Manzoor Wattoo here on Tuesday and sought his help for restoration of peace in the troubled region.

The five-member delegation included Muhammad Ibrahim, Maulana Ataullah Shahab, Professor Ghulam Husain Saleem, Wazir Ibadat Ali and Saeed Afzal. They discussed with the minister the latest law and order situation in the GB. They underscored the need for drastic measures to bring back peace.

Having heard a detailed report from the delegation, the minister said law and order in the GB would remain a challenge unless perpetrators of the killings were nabbed and punished.The GB Council members forwarded some proposals for improving the situation in the region. They also demanded immediate arrest and punishment to perpetrators of the Kohistan, Gilgit and Chilas incidents.

They also demanded relaxation in the curfew imposed there allowing people to purchase their food and other needs of daily life. Wattoo agreed to the proposals. He said restoration of peace and maintenance of law and order in the region would remain a challenge unless the criminal minds and the hands involved in the incidents were not apprehended and brought to the justice.

The minister said that the government was committed to restore peace in the region and every possible measure in this regard would be taken. He also assured on the occasion that the Karakoram Highway would soon be opened for public and goods transport, so that the supply and communication of Gilgit-Baltistan region could be restored.
