Nawaz shouldn’t meddle in G-B govt affairs, says Shah

By Shabbir Mir  in The Express Tribune, May 29th, 2013.

GILGIT: Mehdi Shah, the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, warned Nawaz Sharif against ‘meddling’ with the PPP-led government in the region.

“Attempts to dislodge our government will lead to a contest closely observed by the media and the public,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

However, Shah admitted this was a defensive stance, with no visible provocation as yet from the PML-N camp.

“We are sure he [Nawaz] won’t do that [meddle with the G-B government], as his gestures towards Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh are quite encouraging,” he said. On the other hand, PML-N leaders said they favoured the G-B government completing its term.

“PML-N isn’t interested in toppling the government, though we may replace the governor,” said the regional chief of the PML-N, Hafizur Rahman. “The public will provide accountability, as it did in the recent elections.”

Improving conditions:  Shah also spoke about the upcoming budget allotment for G-B, claiming that the total budget layout for 2013-14 would be Rs24.6 billion, nearly 34% more than the previous budget.

“The development budget will be Rs9.7 billion, while the non-development budget will be Rs15billion for G-B,” Shah said.
