Human rights activists seek judiciary’s support: By Shabbir Mir in Express Tribune, Apr 29

GILGIT: Human rights activists on Saturday briefed judges and lawyers about the issues being faced by residents of Gilgit-Baltistan(G-B) and requested them to play an effective role in restoring people’s rights.

The session was held at the G-B Chief Court, with Justice Wazir Shakeel, a former law minister.

“There are violations of human rights in the region and your intervention can guarantee provision of those rights to the residents,” said Pakistan Red Crescent Society Chairman Asif Hussain.

Member of G-B Council Amjad Hussain, G-B High Court Bar Association President Basharat Ali and District Bar Association President Nadeem Ahmad and local coordinators for the International Human Rights Observer and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan were also present in the meeting.

“We are struggling for the rights of the people from our end, but cannot be completely successful without your support,” said Asif Hussain.

He added sectarian conflict, lack of health and education facilities, clean drinking water and lack of shelter homes for women are some of the issues being faced by residents in the region.

The plight of prisoners in jails also require attention as jails here are overcrowded, he added.

Hussain suggested a human rights committee be formed comprising lawyers to look into rights issues and suggest possible solutions to the judiciary. “It would be like bridging the gap between the common citizens and the honourable judges,” he said.

Justice Shakeel assured the delegation of his support, saying that he would discuss it with other judges to find a way out.  “We cannot afford to live in a society without fundamental human rights,” he said.
