Emboldened by the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the expulsion of Nazeer Ahamed from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leading to the termination of his parliamentary seat, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said it would seriously consider similar disciplinary action against around 25 of its MPs who broke ranks with it, a party official said.
The Supreme Court ruled in favour of the decision by the SLMC to expel Nazeer Ahamed after he left the party and accepted the post of Environment Minister in the government.
Commenting on the latest development, SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam told Daily Mirror quite a number of SLPP members had breached the party discipline in recent times, with some such MPs even joining the opposition.
“We seriously consider taking action against them in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling . We sought explanations from them earlier. We will meet this week and discuss furthering action against them,” he said .
However , he said the SLPP would not be able to take disciplinary action against MPs such as Udaya Gammanpila,Wimal Weerawansa and Vasudeva Nanayakkara since they were from different parties but aligned with the SLPP for electoral purposes.
“There are SLPP members such as Dullas Alahapperuma, Dilan Perera , Anura Yapa who are SLPPers who acted against the party’s stand. We will consider action against them,” he said.
