GB employees go on strike against cut in salary

GILGIT, June 12: Employees of various departments, including civil secretariat, on Wednesday observed a pen down strike to demand revocation of a federal government notification withdrawing a special allowance paid to government workers in the region. The region’s all employees association had given call for the strike.

Routine work was suspended in all offices and people visiting these offices faced problems.

The employees wore black ribbons on their hands. They had also displayed banners in the city inscribed their demand.

The protesting workers told reporters that they would not join the duties till the notification was withdrawn. They declared the step a conspiracy against the employees of Gilgit-Baltistan.

FLOODS WREAK HAVOC: Overflowing water from rivers and nullahs killed two persons and damaged roads, bridges and properties in the region. The casualties occurred in Astore district. Bodies of the two victims were yet to be recovered, local officials told Dawn on phone here.

In Gilgit, floodwater destroyed crops and orchards in Shoti area, according to administration officials. A main bridge in the city was also washed away by the surging waves in the river, closing roads. Army personnel and public works department workers were busing restoring traffic on the roads.

In Ghizer, the floodwater partially damaged a bridge in Dalnati area while houses along a river were also damaged forcing inmates to go to safe places.

Floodwaters also disrupted power supply to Gupis, Gahkuch and Singal areas, officials said.

In Sadpara area of Skardu, water entered into houses and people spent night in the open. In Shigar, a bridge was destroyed by floods.
