ISLAMABAD: The Makran division of Balochistan has become free of loadshedding and there will be no power shortage in the area for next five years, thanks to another 35MW of electricity now being supplied by Iran.
Pakistan was already getting 35MW of electricity from Iran, but after the increase in the capacity of the transmission lines, the power supply has been doubled to 70MW from Feb 26, a spokesman for the Ministry of Water and Power told Dawn on Wednesday.
The overall power demand of the Makran division is 55MW during the peak summer season and 40MW in winter season and now with the import of about 70MW, the entire Mekran division has become a loadshedding free area of the province.
The electricity from Iran is meeting requirements of Gwadar Deep Sea Port, Gwadar district, Turbat, Panjgore, Mand and other
areas of the division.
The Quesco had been resorting to 10 to 12 hours loadshedding in all areas of the division in summer in the past.
Meanwhile, Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar said in a statement that the government had been taking all measures to facilitate the people of Balochistan.
He said that special efforts were being made to upgrade the entire transmission network in the province within the shortest possible time.
He said that industrial, commercial and domestic consumers of the area would benefit from the power supply leading to promotion of economic and social development.
The ministry’s spokesman said that another two projects of electricity import from Iran — 1,000MW and 100MW — were in final stages and work on the construction of transmission lines would begin soon.http://www.dawn.com/2012/03/01/electricity-from-iran-frees-makran-of-loadshedding.html
