Call to save Gojal villages from sinking: The Dawn, Feb 11

Islamabad, Feb 10: Human rights and political activists from Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday criticised the government for what they called inaction and indifferent attitude towards the landslide-hit people of Hunza-Gojal.

Briefing mediapersons about the landslide that hit Atabad in Hunza and killed 19 people and severed communication links between China and Pakistan, at the National Press Club, leaders of Gilgit-Baltistan Human Rights Advocacy Network (GBHRAN) and Progressive Youth Front (PYF) said that despite lapse of over a month the government has taken no serious step to mitigate the sufferings of the affected people.

The landslide blocked the Hunza River creating an artificial lake there which has cut off Gojal from the rest of the area and submerged low-lying areas rendering thousands of people homeless in Ayeenabad and Shishkat villages, they said.

Over 25,000 people of Gojal valley are facing crisis-like situation because of shortage of food, medicines and other essential items. The economic and civic activities have come to a standstill.

PYF leader Baba Jan, Sami Barcha and Nazimullah Baig and members of GBHRAN Hafeez and Najibullah expressed their dissatisfaction over the measures taken by the government for the affected people.— www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/dawn-content-library/dawn/the-newspaper/national/call-to-save-gojal-villages-from-sinking-120
