Boundary dispute leads to KKH blockade

GILGIT, June 4: People of Thore valley of Diamer district blocked the Karakoram Highway on Tuesday to protest government’s failure to settle the boundary dispute between Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The status of a few kilometers area on both sides of the Basari check post, which separates the two regions, is not clear, often leading to unrest between people of Diamer and Kohistan.

Police said the people of Harban valley of Kohistan district had blocked the highway the other day, halting hundreds of truckloads of timber bound for Rawalpindi.

Sources said that former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf had constituted a judicial commission to settle the issue. However, they said the members of the commission could not be notified till date.

Police said people of Thore valley accused the Kohistan district administration and Diamer police chief of not resolving the boundary dispute.

According to the police the protesters from Thore valley forcibly halted work on the Wapda colony and chanted slogans against the government. Later, Diamer police chief reached the spot to pacify the people.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner of Diamer and district coordination officer of Kohistan reportedly met to resolve the dispute. However, the two officials didn’t reach an understanding on the matter, sources said. http://dawn.com/2013/06/05/boundary-dispute-leads-to-kkh-blockade-2/
