RAWALPINDI, April 17: The Azad Kashmir Supreme Court Bar Association here on Saturday demanded AJK President Raja Zulqarnain to resign, saying lawyers would not support his steps regarding reappointment of removed chief justice of Supreme Court.
In a convention arranged at the District Bar Association, Rawalpindi, the AJK lawyers’ representatives passed a unanimous resolution asking the president to resign and sought action against Justice Reaz Ahmed Chaudhry in accordance with the recommendations of Supreme Judicial Council of AJK.
In the resolution, the lawyers urged Prime Minster Yousaf Raza Gilani to take action against the removed justice under the 1974 interim constitution of AJK as chairman Kashmir Council.
AJK SCBA president Zafar Hussain Mirza and vice-president Raja Sajjad were among the participants in the convention.
Supporting the steps taken by AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, speakers on the occasion said lawyers would fully back the PM on the issue.
They also demanded appointment of Justice Manzoor Hussain Gilani as chief justice of AJK to end the judicial crisis.
The speakers said Justice Reaz had become too controversial to be the CJ of AJK.
Speaking on the occasion, SCBA Pakistan president Qazi Mohammad Anwar extended his full support to the lawyers of AJK in their “fight for rule of law and supremacy of constitution”. He said lawyers from across the country would fully support them and join the protest rally on Constitutional Avenue if they decided to hold it.
Qazi Anwar said civil bureaucracy had been hampering the dispensation of justice in Pakistan as well as AJK.
