AJK PPP leader killed in by-polls violence: The News, Feb 8

ISLAMABAD: A leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Azad Kashmir, was killed at a polling station at the FG Model School in F-6/2 during the by-elections on a vacant seat of legislative assembly when activists of a rival political party opened fire on their opponents on Sunday evening, police said.

The victim, Captain (retd) Tariq Mehmood, son of Abdul Aziz, of Protha, Khoi Ratta, Azad Kashmir, was the administration officer of the Jammu Kashmir Housing Society in Islamabad and was the chief supporter of the PPP candidate.

The Aabpara Police have taken up the case and handed over the body to the heirs after post-mortem. Activists of the candidates — Ahmad Qadri (All Jammu Kashmir Muslim Conference) and Abdus Salam Butt (PPP) — started chanting slogans after the polling closed for the LA-40 Jammu-V, Azad Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly. This resulted in a clash and finally a group of All Jammu Kashmir Muslim Conference started firing at the activists of the other party, killing Tariq Mehmood on the spot. He was rushed to the PIMS where doctors pronounced him dead.

Meanwhile, the interior ministry has suspended two officers — SHO (Aabpara police station) and Area Magistrate — holding them responsible for the clash between two political groups, sources said.

The interior ministry has ordered a judicial inquiry into the killing. District Magistrate Aamar Ali Ahmad would conduct the inquiry, interior ministry sources said.
