AJK deputy speaker faces no-trust motion

MUZAFFARABAD, Dec 16: The ruling Muslim Conference (MC) here on Wednesday tabled a no-trust motion against Deputy Speaker Mohammad Salim Butt of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to elevate one of its female lawmaker to this office.

The document seeking no-trust against Mr Butt under section 29 (8) of the AJK Interim Constitution (Act 1974) and rule 27 (1) of the Rules of Procedure was signed by 19 MC lawmakers and submitted in the Legislative Assembly Secretariat by Shamim Ali Malick, one of the movers.

MC has already pledged to Mehrun Nisa, wife of All Parties Hurriat Conference (APHC) leader Syed Yousaf Nasim, to be its candidate for the office of deputy speaker.

Legislative Assembly official Tariq Zia Abbasi told Dawn that a session was most likely to be summoned on December 24 for voting on the motion. In the event of success of no-trust move, schedule for election of new deputy speaker would be issued instantly, he said.

When contacted, Mr Butt said his party’s Raabta Committee would decide how to handle the move.
