Opposition and SJB leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament yesterday that his party would abide by the instructions issued by Pope Francis to continue the struggle in seeking the truth about the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

“I give an undertaking that our party stands by the Pope’s statement, and will not give up the struggle until we find the truth pertaining to the Easter Sunday terror attacks,” Premadasa said making a special statement with permission from the Chair. He added that his party would stand by the stance adopted by Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Catholic community in this regard.

“We have conducted many debates on this matter in this House. Rulers one by one pledged to find the truth and punish those responsible. Many debates including a very recent one have been held here. But nothing has happened. Gotabaya Rajapaksa came to power promising justice. He promised to find the mastermind of these attacks. The incumbent President said that he would seek Scotland Yard assistance in investigations. Then there was a proposal to appoint another Parliamentary Select Committee on the matter. We proposed that a PSC in the form of the 9/11 committee of the US should be appointed under the chairmanship of the opposition and we would support it. So far nothing has happened. Justice is not delivered yet. So far what we saw is nothing but hiding or protecting those responsible for this crime.

“We pledge to this House that we would not protect anyone responsible for this crime or any officer who is accused of failing to prevent the attacks. We undertake to act against everyone responsible by their act of commission or omission of this heinous crime. We neither safeguard nor protect anyone who shirked their duties in preventing this,” Premadasa said.
