The Cabinet of Ministers has directed the Legal Draftsman to prepare a new Employment Bill based on a concept paper prepared by the Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment and a set of recommendations made by a committee chaired by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
The Department of Government Information yesterday (31 October) stated that Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara has prepared a concept paper for the formulation of a new Employment Bill in consultation with the relevant parties, including trade unions and employers.
According to the department, the concept paper had been discussed by the Cabinet at its meeting on 7 August 2023, following which it had been referred to a tripartite committee representing employers, employees, and the Government functioning under the Prime Minister’s Office, for further discussion with the relevant parties and to make appropriate recommendations.
The department further stated that the said committee chaired by Premier Gunawardena had studied the concept paper and submitted a report containing recommendations to the Cabinet, the latter which had then decided to advise the Legal Draftsman to prepare a Bill based on those recommendations and the initial concept paper.
Attempts to contact Nanayakkara for further information on the matter proved futile.
