The Cabinet of Ministers, on Monday (29), granted its approval to the joint proposal submitted by Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms President’s Counsel (PC) Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Minister of Foreign Affairs M.U.M. Ali Sabry PC for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation mechanism in Sri Lanka, taking into account the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in South Africa.

Speaking at the Cabinet media briefing held yesterday (30), Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Bandula Gunawardana said that the decision was taken with the aim of making a domestic mechanism to address issues in the reconciliation process while promoting national unity, peace, the rule of law, co-existence, and equality.

“Last month (April), Dr. Rajapakshe PC and Ali Sabry PC visited South Africa at the invitation of the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation in South Africa in order to conduct a preliminary study on South Africa’s TRC.

During that visit, they held discussions with the South African President, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, and the other heads of the South African Government, following which the duo submitted the said proposal.

The Cabinet approved the proposal on Monday (29) taking it as a matter of national importance which has not been given attention for decades,” he said.
