President Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that the Government is considering the full implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution within the next few years.
“We are looking at full implementation of the 13th amendment within the next few years,” he said, while attending the State Thai Pongal Festival held at the Jaffna Durga Hall yesterday (15), the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
He added that the Social Justice Commission will be established in order to build a country where everyone can live in harmony, by solving the problems of the people belonging to all sections of the population.
The President, who was escorted to the venue by a Tamil cultural procession, was received in line with Hindu rituals.
In addition, the President stated that in order to build a country where all races co-exist and achieve economic prosperity, everyone must return to the Sri Lankan identity established by the late D.S. Senanayake 75 years ago. He went on to say that a statement on the Government’s steps toward reconciliation will be made public in February, and that a meeting of party leaders will be convened next week to discuss the matter.
President Wickremesinghe also stated that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s work will be accelerated in order to provide relief to the families of the disappeared.
The President also visited the head of the Jaffna Sri Naga Viharaya, Ven. Meegahajandure Sirivimala Nayaka Thera, and inquired about his health, the PMD mentioned, adding that the Thera wished the best to the President and chanted Seth Pirith in order to invoke blessings upon the latter.
The press release also added that Buddhist Hindu Religious Forum Chairman Dr. M. Morgan welcomed the President.
Meanwhile, President Ranil Wickremesinghe met Rev. Sri Somasundaram, the Nallai Adeena Ashramadipati, to receive his blessings as well.
The President also visited Jaffna Bishop Rev. Dr. Justin Gnanapragasam and engaged in a brief discussion with the latter, the PMD also said.
The event was attended by Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda, State Minister Dr. Suren Raghavan, President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake, Army Commander Lt. Gen. Vikum Liyanage, and several other officials, according to the PMD.
