NAB probes ‘irregularities’ in GB recruitments

GILGIT, Jan 7: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has started investigation into alleged irregularities in appointments made in various departments of Gilgit-Baltistan.

“We have been asked by NAB to provide all details, including the copies of appointments made by various departments, so as to scrutinise the process to see if any irregularities were committed during the recruitments,” a senior official of the AGPR told Dawn on Monday on the request that his name be withheld.

The official said lists were being prepared by the AGPR and the district offices in this regard which would be furnished to the NAB.

Sources disclosed that only in the education department thousands of appointments were made without fulfilling laid down procedure.

It is learnt that the salaries of more than 300 appointees have been held by the office of accountant general of Gilgit-Baltistan as there existed no such posts.

An official said the former director education Raja Nasir who is currently on a long leave abroad had recruited hundreds of individuals in the department.

People from all walks of life have raised hue and cry that blue eyed people were given favour in appointments.

“The government has sold all vacancies to cronies depriving the deserving people of their due right,” said the opposition leader Janbaz Khan.

SERVICE STRUCTURE: The government is devising a comprehensive package to regularise the services of contract employees.

A high ranking official serving in civil secretariat told Dawn that all subordinate departments of Gilgit-Baltistan had been directed to furnish details and number of such employees.

However, the official was tight lipped when asked whether or not a proper procedure would be followed in regularisation of the services of ad hoc employees.

POLICE ROLE: The Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah has asked police to work diligently to ensure protection to the lives and properties of the people.

Talking to Inspector General of Police Usman Zakria on Monday the chief minister said the benefits and privileges available to police of other provinces had also been extended to the GB police. But, he regretted that the performance of the police was not satisfactory.
