Operation against terrorists in GB soon: Malik

SKARDU: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Tuesday again made it clear that criminals had been running towards Gilgit-Baltistan as they feared military operation in Waziristan.

Talking to media men here, the interior minister said that a targeted operation would soon be launched against terrorists in Darel area of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Malik added that militants were being monitored via satellite in this area.

Criminals of Waziristan had been running towards Gilgit-Baltistan, Malik said and added that he had directed the IG of GB to enhance patrolling at the entry points.

Meanwhile, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said that the anti-Pakistan elements wanted to shatter peace and harmony in Gilgit-Baltistan, but people would foil their malicious designs. He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation’s subsidiary FM-93 station here on Tuesday. The new radio station would meet entertainment and information needs of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

He said the government would not allow anyone to play with the future of the country and lay hurdles in the way of development of the region.

Kaira said the recent trouble was not due to sectarian reasons, but it was terrorism aimed at destabilizing the area.

The minister said the government had empowered the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. They had their own government, and if peace prevailed then projects like Diamer-Bhasha Dam, Bunji Dams as well as tourism potential and exploitation of natural resources of the area would bring prosperity and create employment opportunities for the local people.

The minister said the government had been trying its best to resolve problems of the people. He, however, acknowledged that expectations of the people might not have been fulfilled in some respects.

The minister said the credit for restoring the 1973 Constitution went to the PPP government as a result of which resources and powers had been transferred to the provinces.

“There will be no compromise on peace in Gilgit Baltistan. The federal government will extend full cooperation to the GB government in this regard,” Kaira added.
