Kashmiris call for Scottish-model referendum

LONDON: British Kashmiris under the auspices of Kashmir Centre London organised a peaceful demonstration outside Indian High commission here.

Such demonstrations were also held in Birmingham and Glasgow.

The demonstrators were carrying banners like “Indian forces quit Kashmir” “Indian democracy shame”, “stop human rights violations in Kashmir,” “implement UN resolutions in Kashmir”, “our demand Freedom.” A memorandum was also handed over to the Indian High Commission for Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh in this regard.

“The British government’s decision to allow people of Scotland to hold a referendum through their democratic self-determination should become a beacon of light for India to allow a democratic vote to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It would be the best option which would provide an opportunity for the Kashmiri people to exercise their right to self determination in line with the commitment and resolutions of the United Nations,” the memorandum added.

Demonstrators raised full throated slogans against Indian occupation. It was on this day that Indian forces invaded the identity of Jammu and Kashmir and occupied 3/4th of the state. The British Kashmiris demonstrated solidarity with their Kashmir brethren in Indian Occupied Kashmir on this day.

At the end of the London demonstration Prof Nazir Ahmed Shawl, chairman Kashmir Centre London handed over a memorandum to the Indian High Commission for Indian Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh.

The memorandum said that human rights violations continue in Indian Occupied Kashmir despite promise for zero tolerance. “Mass graves have been confirmed by International Tribunal for Peace and Justice and also by the state Human Rights Commission Srinagar.” The memorandum called on the Indian government to address the aspirations of Kashmiris and hold a referendum as was organised in East Timor and south Sudan. http://www.thenews.com.pk/Todays-News-2-140091-Kashmiris-call-for-Scottish-model-referendum
