Women in Herat Took on the Streets Opposing University Ban

report in Khaama Press online, Dec 24, 2022
A group of women in Western Herat province earlier today took to on streets protesting against the ban on female students attending university in Afghanistan.

Videos circulating on social media showed a group of women taking cover in a lane in the city of Herat to escape a powerful stream of water aimed to disperse the protesters.

Dozens of women holding a protest march could be heard shouting slogans including: “Education is our right, “education for all or none,” and so on.

Simultaneously, a group of female university students protested in Takhar province, condemning the Taliban’s latest act of banning women’s university education. The protestors chanted, “education is our right.”

The wave of protests in the capital Kabul, Nangarhar, Takhar, and Herat indicate women’s final chance for demanding their inherent right of accessing to education.

Meanwhile, the number of university lecturers resigning from their positions in solidarity with female university students is rising.

Earlier this week, the Islamist group banned female students from higher education, triggering condemnations on national and international levels. The Taliban said women had not been wearing appropriate Islamic attire at university and had been interacting with their male counterparts.

Following the protest in the capital Kabul earlier this week, the authorities of the interim regime arrested five women taking part in a protest. They also arrest three journalists. Detaining protesters and journalists is not something new. The Taliban have done so in the past months drawing massive criticism. https://www.khaama.com/women-in-herat-took-on-the-streets-opposing-university-ban/
