Wolesi Jirga approves defense minister, spymaster By Akhtar M. Nikzad in The Afghanistan Times, June 20, 2016

KABUL: The Wolesi Jirga on Monday gave vote of confidence to the nominee for defense ministry Abdullah Habibi, chief of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) Mohammad Masoom Stanekzai, and member of the High Council for Supreme Court Mohammad Zaman Sangari.

Stanekzai achieved 161 votes out of 224 present lawmakers and was approved as Chief of National Directorate of Security.

Abdullah Habibi got 167 votes in his favor to become defense minister.

In the same time, Mohammad Zaman Sangari received 132 votes of confidence and was designated as member of High Council of the Supreme Court.

Stanekzai was previously serving as the acting minister of defense after he was rejected for the post by MPs. Habibi was serving for 15 years in various segments of the army.

Stanekzai vowed not to spare any efforts to remove the armed insurgents, whom he called “servants of aliens”.

“Peace is precondition of negotiation, but if any insurgents give negative answer to the government’s demands they would be expunged by NDS personals in every nook and corner of the country” he promised.

“The methods of intelligence services have changed by establishment of new technology therefore NDS needs for new advanced gadgets and professional capacity. I will not work as calm server in the important administration, but seriously make achievements against insurgents.”

He claimed that foreign countries launch intelligence war in the country and recruit civilians as war tools against the government.

Strengthening of conflict against insurgents, defending territory and integrity of the country was the major pledges of Defense Minister, Abdullah Khan.

He stressed with his approval by lawmakers, he would try to control battle against Taliban insurgents and will impose heavy pressures for elimination of sworn enemies of Afghanistan.

After two years inauguration of the National Unity government the Ministry of Defense was managed by acting ministers and the National Directorate Security also experienced several caretakers.

Mps are hopeful by approval of the candidates, Afghan people to be witness of security and surprising of insurgents in battle lines.

President Ashraf Ghani praised the lawmakers for approving his nominees for the security chiefs, saying that the government would participate in the upcoming Warsaw conference with full hands and full confidence.http://afghanistantimes.af/wolesi-jirga-approves-defense-minister-spymaster/
