The ruling party Awami League is quite busy preparing for the 11th general polls, which is scheduled to be held this year.
As a part of election campaigning, representatives from the party, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the president of Awami League, have begun district level tours across Bangladesh.
Along with central leaders, grassroots level leaders are also passing a busy time preparing for the upcoming polls.
The election-time activities of the ruling party go beyond just campaigning. The Awami League policy makers are holding regular discussions on setting a polls-time policy and a solid strategy to secure victory in the election.
The party is verifying the popularity of possible candidates and also considering different strategies depending on participation of the BNP in upcoming parliamentary polls.
What are the grassroots leaders thinking?
The correspondent spoke with a number of grassroots Awami League leaders to garner more details about their election activities.
A number of grassroots leaders, giving their opinions, said: “To secure a victory in the next general polls, the Awami League must back leaders and activists that are committed, and get rid of controversial lawmakers.”
The leaders also recommended that disputes among party leaders and activists in some of the organizational districts must be resolved.
Party leaders believe that nominations should be given to politicians who uphold the ideology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and work for the betterment of the people.
The grassroots leaders further said: “Politicians, who get involved in illicit businesses and engage in excessive nepotism, should be boycotted from the politics.”
The leaders firmly believe that implementing these moves will be crucial for Awami League’s victory in the next election.
Responding to a query, Tangail district Awami League President Fazlur Rahman Faruk said: “Awami League must put emphasis on nominating capable leaders as candidates for the next general polls. Choosing the correct candidate will ensure victory for the party.”
He added: “The party should choose a candidate who has good understanding with other leaders, activists and the people. A leader, who is known by the central unit, but a stranger in his own neighbourhood, cannot be considered a suitable candidate.”
Addressing the issue, Gaibandha district Awami League General Secretary Abu Bakar Siddique said: “There are internal conflicts among the party leaders and activists. The Awami League must resolve these disputes before launching a full scale election campaign.”
Noakhali District Awami League President Professor Khairul Anam Selim stated: “The candidate must be chosen based on the person’s capability. Leaders and activists must remain unified.
“The leaders must showcase the government’s development work to the people and strengthen ties with them. This strategy will ensure Awami League’s victory.”
Chandpur district Awami League General Secretary Abu Nayeem Patwary Dulal and Narayanganj metropolitan unit General Secretary Khokon Saha echoed the same opinion.
Meanwhile, Bogra district Awami League General Secretary Mujibur Rahman Majnu said: “The ruling party must step up its efforts to ensure victory in the next election. Leaders who made sacrifices and are capable should be nominated.
“A leader who goes to the people and guide the party activists should be given nomination.”
Bogra district Awami League General Secretary Anwar Sadat Samrat said: “If Awami League takes care to nominate the correct candidates, victory in the polls will be ensured.”
He said: “The people of Bangladesh have trusted the judgment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the past, and they will do so again.
“The ruling party must seek out candidates who will earn the trust of the people.”
