ISLAMABAD – The US administration has conveyed to Pakistan to put on hold the issue of recognition of the Taliban government till the consensus is developed on the matter by all stakeholders.
Credible diplomatic sources told The Nation that the matter was discussed in detail during ministerial level contact between the two countries on the sidelines of the UNGA last week in New York.
Sources termed this face to face meeting between two foreign ministers as a major breakthrough between the two countries on Afghanistan and bilateral issues. “Pakistan conveyed its reservations to secretary Blinken about his earlier remarks on relations with Pakistan in congressional hearings, and said such remarks are counterproductive for bilateral relations,” source said.
Diplomatic sources said Pakistan accepted US proposals on Afghanistan and both countries agreed to work closely on Afghanistan including on the possible resumption of humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan by the United States, which would allow assistance by all global organisations.
Both sides also agreed to work together and agreed on intelligence sharing to counter any possible terrorist threat from Afghanistan.
Sources said a troika plus meeting on Afghanistan is expected to meet next month to discuss financial, political and security issues concerning Afghanistan. “The date and venue of the meeting will be decided by next week,” a diplomatic source told The Nation.
Meanwhile in a statement issued from Doha, Afghan government’s new Ambassador designate to UN, Suhail Shaheen said Afghanistan is passing through a historical moment, now every inch of the country is under our control, the previous regime has collapsed.
“I call on the international community particularly the United Nations, to give Afghanistan a seat in the UN to Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA),” Shaheen commented.
“We want to deliver to our people by getting a UN seat, we can easily deliver humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people in coordination with the international community,” he maintained.
Suhail Shaheen warned that the winter has already started therefore its every one’s responsibility to facilitate humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.
“Our doors are open for cooperation and we are ready to work with any international organisation in this regard,” He said.
Suhail Shaheen by quoting international Law said, it is our right that IEA government to have representation in the UN.
“I call upon the UN not to deprive about 40 million Afghans of their representation in the United Nations,” Shaheen demanded.https://nation.com.pk/29-Sep-2021/us-wants-pakistan-to-delay-recognising-taliban-govt-in-afghanistan
