Report in The Daily Star, Oct 16, 2023
US Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Afreen Akhter is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on a three-day visit today.
Her visit will feature prominently the national elections and Rohingya crisis, according to diplomatic sources.
She may hold meetings with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and then visit the Rohingya camp during her visit on October 16-18.
Afreen Akhter, former national security and foreign affairs adviser to US Senator Chris Van Hollen, visited Bangladesh in November last year and May this year.
The visit takes place as part of a series of meetings between the officials of Bangladesh and US both in Dhaka and Washington.
The US has been pressing for a free and fair election due by January next year. It is enforcing a visa policy for Bangladesh, which restricts visas to those involved in vote rigging and intimidation.
