The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) called upon the authorities in Afghanistan on the occasion of “World Human Rights Day” to embrace human rights commitments as the cornerstone of a stable, peaceful, and prosperous future, and to lend their full support to it.
On Saturday, UNAMA reiterated its commitment to the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan by issuing a statement on the occasion of World Human Rights Day.
The organization’s statement highlights that the Taliban government officials have a bigger role in promoting and supporting human rights for all Afghans, especially for women and girls.
Roza Otunbayeva, the head of UNAMA, pointed out that Afghanistan is a member of international human rights treaties and stressed that the preservation of human rights is essential for the well-being, reconciliation, and stability of Afghanistan’s future.
According to the organization, despite improvements in security following the reduction in armed violence, the human rights situation in Afghanistan has remained “dire” since 2021.
UNAMA’s Deputy Office has accused Taliban governing authorities of systematic violations of women’s and girls’ rights, adding that many of them have been excluded from daily life and public affairs.
It’s worth noting that December 10th marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Additionally, in UNAMA’s statement, alongside violations against women and girls in Afghanistan, they also highlighted “arbitrary detention, threats, and censorship of women’s rights defenders.”
Over the past two years, numerous human rights organizations have called for the protection of human rights in Afghanistan, particularly the rights of women and girls.
