UN Security Council will hold a meeting on women’s situation in Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati in The Khaama Press Online, December 10, 2023
A meeting about the situation of Afghan girls and women is planned at the United Nations Security Council on Monday, December 11th. The meeting will take place behind closed doors.

During this session, the United Nations Security Council is expected to review the proposals presented in the report by Feridun Sinirlioglu, the Independent Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Mr. Sinirlioglu’s report was presented to the Security Council of the United Nations members on Wednesday, 14th November, with the signature of Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In this report, a way out of the Taliban’s international isolation and breaking the deadlock of the group’s non-recognition in the global arena has been demonstrated.

Mr Sinirlioglu’s report states that commitment to international commitments and initiating a process leading to the creation of a comprehensive constitution will normalize global relations with the Taliban.

Meanwhile, the report called on resuming dialogue among the people of Afghanistan to establish an inclusive government, which is also part of the proposals presented in this report.

Previously, Heather Barr, responsible for the Women’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch, had criticized that this session is being held behind closed doors.

She stated that the outcomes of the upcoming session will impact the fate of girls and women in Afghanistan, so they have the right to know what transpires in this meeting.
