Two injured in attack on police outside church

LAHORE: Unidentified armed men fired on police personnel deputed outside a church in Township creating panic in the vicinity on Tuesday.

The policemen survived the attack while two passers-by suffered bullet injuries and were stated to be stable at hospital. The incident took place a few weeks after suicide blasts carried out at two churches in Youhanabad.

The Tuesday’s ‘armed attack’ outside Saint Peter’s Church at Girja Chowk of Township alarmed the police authorities who sent an alert to round up the criminals involved in the incident.

Police pickets were set up in the area and personnel deputed at entry and exit points of the city were put on alert to avert escape of the suspects. Police sources said the assailants managed their escape on a two-wheeler.

A police official told this reporter that constables Asif Nazir and Mohammad Shafi were discharging duty outside the church when two young motorcyclists opened indiscriminate fire. He said the assailants fled the scene when policemen retaliated.

The injured passersby were identified as Imran of Green Town and Majid of Jiabaga.

Police have registered a case against the unidentified suspects under sections 353, 186 and 324 of Pakistan Penal Code.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and sought a report from the Operations DIG.
