PESHAWAR/KHYBER: Three alleged militants were killed in an intelligence-based operation in Bannu district on Tuesday, according to the military’s media wing.

The operation was conducted in the Nurar locality of Bannu district around midnight, the ISPR said, adding that three alleged terrorists were killed following an intense exchange of fire with the troops.

The ISPR claimed that the deceased terrorists were actively involved in attacks against security forces and killings of citizens. The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan has confirmed the militants were its members.

Tensions also gripped Tirah area of Khyber district near the Pak-Afghan border after a militants attack on a temporary security checkpoint at midnight on Monday.

Sources told Dawn that suspected militants launched an attack on a checkpoint, established in a government school building in the Takhtaki area.

Security forces retaliated to the attack which lasted for some time, they said. No casualties or injuries were reported as the suspected militants managed to escape.

Unrest still prevailed in the area after the attack as security forces besieged a house that they thought they believed to be the militants’ hideout.

Sources said security forces had established the checkpoint in a school building sometime back against the wishes of the locals as the school was situated in the middle of a densely populated area. Local elders had demanded the security officials shift the checkpoint to a nearby hillock which overlooked the entire region as it was better suited for the purpose.
