The Taliban militants suffered heavy casualties during the airstrikes conducted by the Afghan Air Force in northern Jawzjan province of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said at least 35 militants were killed and 16 others were wounded during the raids.

A statement by MoD said at least 14 motorcycles and a vehicle belonging to the militants were also destroyed in the airstrikes conducted in Aqcha district.

According to MoD, the militants killed in the airstrikes had major role in terrorist activities against the local residents of Jawzjan.

The airstrikes by the Afghan Air Force in Jawzjan comes as the First Vice President General Abdul Rashid Dostum is busy in coordinating military operations in the vicinity of this province.

The Office of the First Vice President in a statement said Monday that the main highway connecting Sherbarghan with Sar-e-Pul province was opened during the operations.

The statement further added that 40 villages were cleared as a result of the operations which are lying along the highway.

The operations were launched early on Monday morning with the Afghan Air Force providing close-air support to the Afghan security forces.

The highway was considered as one of the volatile highways in the north ahead of the operations, the statement said, adding that the militant groups and criminal gangs were involved in destructive activities, robberies and kidnappings on the highway.http://www.khaama.com/taliban-suffer-heavy-casualties-in-jawzjan-airstrikes-mod-says-0899
