Taliban Still An ‘Emerging Threat’ Despite Ghani’s Policy Shift by Wali Arian in Tolo News, May 15, 2016

The Taliban are still an ’emerging threat’ to national security despite President Ashraf Ghani’s recent policy shift to tackle the hardline movement from a military standpoint, a number of Afghan political commentators said on Sunday.

This comes after Ghani said recently, during a speech to a joint session of the Afghan parliament, that he would deal with the group from a robust and harsher military stance unless they lay down arms and join the peace process.

The experts argued that 20 days have passed since the president’s order and that nothing has changed in the war with the Taliban, adding that violence has drastically increased and Taliban has extended attacks against the security forces.

Experts also criticized poor leadership of the war, saying that negligence in duty has been a reason for the growing violence and increased Taliban attacks.

“Main part of our defense line focuses on Helmand in order to secure the security forces and the people. The other part of the operations are offensives over the enemies to repress them. Particularly our operation forces the special units of national police, the national army commanders and public protection force are also carrying out their operations,” MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.

On the ground, it seems that the lack of military equipment is still a problem for Afghan forces that battle the Taliban on multiple fronts.

“We have received professional training. We need weapons and equipment,” ANA soldier said.

It seems that Taliban has extended attacks and there has been a visible surge in violence.

‎”If it continues going on same track and we do not mobilize our units, the confusion would have negative consequences on Afghanistan’s future stability as we know that Taliban attacks have increased,” military analyst Hai Gul Sulaiman KHail said.

“As we know there is kind of reluctance which stems from the minds of the leadership. Those who command the war in the provinces, they do not deploy the forces properly,” former deputy minister of interior Mirza Mohammad Yarmand said.

This comes amid ongoing operations by the Afghan Special Forces in various regions across the country.http://www.tolonews.com/en/afghanistan/25305-taliban-still-an-emerging-threat-despite-ghanis-policy-shift
