Taliban Pushed Back In Baghlan:Report in Tolo News, Feb 2, 2016 at 15:22

Security officials in Baghlan said Tuesday that the Taliban attacked a number of security check posts in Band-e-Do area in Pul-e-Khumri city on Monday night but they were faced with a strong response from security forces and local residents.

Baghlan acting police chief Abdul Bashir Bashir said that the Taliban were faced with a strong backlash from residents of the area.

“Taliban launched an attack in Band-e-Do area in Pul-e-Khumri city on Monday night but they were faced with huge resistance by the security forces and the people,” he said.

Bashir added: “Four Taliban fighters were killed, five wounded in the attack. I want to thank the people for their cooperation.”

Baghlan governor Abdul Satar Bariz meanwhile said 13 Taliban were killed and six others wounded in Monday night’s conflict.

“The attack left 13 Taliban dead, including their so-called district chief for Dara-e-Soof and also one of their group leaders named Ataullah. Six Taliban were wounded in the battle,” the governor said.

“Search operations [by security forces] are on in Dand-e-Ghori area,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Alim, a local resident who took up arms against the Taliban, said: “The local people and the local police force members helped to push back the Taliban [from the area].”

“We took left the mosque when Taliban launched a sudden attack in the area, but they escaped after one hour because they faced resistance by the residents,” said Abdul Mahboob, a member of the public uprising in Pul-e-Khumri city.

It is believed that at least 50 Taliban fighters have been killed in the week-long battle with security forces in parts of Pul-e-Khumri, the central city of Baghlan.
