Taliban Intelligence Arrests Perpetrator of Afghanistan’s Balkh Explosions

report in Khaama Press online,April 3, 2023
The Intelligence Department has announced the arrest of one of the perpetrators involved in several deadly attacks in the Balkh province of Afghanistan, including the assassination of Mohammad Dawood Muzamal, governor of Balkh, on Sunday.

The department aired the “confessions” of a young person saying he was involved in at least five attacks, including the governor of Balkh, Tebyan centre and several Shiite centres in Mazar-e-Sharif.

According to the statement released by the Taliban intelligence department, the perpetrator is from the Saighan district of Bamyan and was working for Daesh in the north of Afghanistan.

The statement said that he had cooperated in the attack on the former governor of the Taliban in Balkh, Mohammad Dawood Muzmal, Tebyan Cultural Center and several others.

Earlier last month, a blast tore through the Taliban governor’s office in northern Balkh province, killing him and two others.

The Tebyan Cultural Center was targeted last month during a journalists’ gathering for an award event, leaving at least three people dead and more than 30 others injured.

The accused also confessed that he had contributed to a suicide bomb attack in a mosque in Seh-Dokan and the explosion of a minibus carrying Hazara in Mazar-e-Sharif last year, which killed more than 39 and injured 103 in both explosions.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for all the attacks.

The accused also said he had recently plotted to attack several targets in Balkh and Faryab provinces. However, he was arrested by the Taliban intelligence forces before carrying out the plans.

It is unknown under what conditions the accused person confessed; however, according to the released video by the Taliban intelligence, several wounds on his face show he was beaten and then confessed.

ISI-K is the main rival of the Taliban-led government, targeting Taliban officials, ordinary people and foreigners.

Since the de facto government retook Afghanistan, the extremist IS-K militants have violently attacked the provincial capital of Kabul and other parts of the country. Therefore, security is still the main challenge for the current regime in the country.
