Taliban Focusing On Provincial Capitals by Abdul Wali Arian in Tolo News, Oct 2, 2016

Officials at the Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Sunday said that the Taliban has changed tactic and are focusing on vulnerable provincial capitals.

This comes after the Taliban launched yet another attack against a provincial capital – Farah city, in the western Farah province – three days ago.

According to officials, clashes are ongoing.

In the meantime, the MoD warned the security forces that in the event of them being negligent, they will be prosecuted.

“As much as we search in this regard, we may find some negligence” a spokesman for MoD, Mohammad Radmanish said.

On the issue of Farah, Radmanish said that the Taliban has also taken to hiding in the homes of civilians.

This comes after last year’s attack on Kunduz city and the more recent ones on Lashkargah city in Helmand and Trin Kot, in Uruzghan.

“Taliban slowly target cities and those attacks on a city increases political pressure on government more than attacks on a number of districts,” a military analyst, Saleh Mohammad Registani said.

However, clashes are ongoing around the country. “It has numerous negative effects. First the people living under Taliban rule do not have schools and face economic problems. Smuggling gets easier and terroristic centers will be established,” former deputy for Interior Ministry, Mirza Mohammad Yarmand said. http://www.tolonews.com/en/afghanistan/27578-taliban-focusing-on-provincial-capitals
