A Taliban commander was killed with his 11 fighters during a clearance operation in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the clearance operations were launched in Khanshin district of Helmand which led to the killing of Mullah Yousuf and his 11 companions.

According to a statement by MoD, at least 6 militants operating under the command of Mullah Yousuf were also wounded during the operation.

The Taliban militants group has not commented regarding the report so far.

Khanshin is among the restive districts in southern Helmand province where the Taliban insurgents launched major attacks during the recent months.

Nearly 100 Taliban militants were killed or wounded during the operations in Khanshin district which was retaken by the Afghan forces late in the month of March.

The control of Khanshin district fell to Taliban militants nearly two weeks ago following a coordinated attack involving scores of militants.

Meanwhile, the Afghan forces have stepped up night raids to counter the insurgency activities of the militant groups in the restive provinces.

The Special Operation Forces of the Afghan National Army (ANA) conducted a night raid in Nawzad district of Helmand last week resulting into the release of over 60 inmates kept in Taliban prison.http://www.khaama.com/taliban-commander-mullah-yousuf-killed-with-his-11-fighters-in-helmand-0897
