The First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum has said Sirajuddin Haqqani is a key player in the ongoing violence in Afghanistan with the direct support of Pakistani military intelligence, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
During a meeting with the Afghan armed forces late on Saturday night, Dostum said ISI has been continuously attempting to destabilize Afghanistan and conduct terrorist attacks with the help of Haqqani terrorist network.
Dostum further added that the newly appointed leader of Taliban Mawlavi Haibatullah Akhundzada and his deputy Mullah Yaqoob are useless figures with no authorities but the second deputy chief of Sirajuddin Haqqani is a key player.
He also slammed ISI for the major attacks in the country including a deadly attack on vIP protection unity in capital Kabul earlier in April.
The Afghan officials are saying the Haqqani terrorist network leaders as well as the Taliban group leadership are based in Peshawar and Quetta cities of Pakistan.
The Afghan officials have long been criticizing Pakistan for failing to take actions against the groups using the Pakistani soil to carry out attacks in Afghanistan.
In the meantime, the US Department of Defense recently said Pakistan should deny safe havens to the terrorist and extremist groups in its soil in a bid to help improve the security environment of the region.
“Pakistan must play a role in reducing the threat from terrorist and militant groups in the region,” the Defense Department said in a report.
The report further added that sustained Pakistani efforts to pressure the Haqqani Network and the Taliban and to disrupt active threat streams are necessary to help decrease violence in the region, to reduce the threat posed by these groups, and to achieve lasting progress on counterterrorism issues.
