Seizing Weapons, Drugs: Joint drive to be carried out in Rohingya camps

report in The Daily Star, May 24, 2023
A joint operation will be conducted at Rohingya camps to prevent criminal activities and recover weapons and narcotics, said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday.

If necessary, the army will be present during the drive, he said.

He made the comments after attending a meeting with the National Committee on Coordination, Management, and Law and Order of Forcefully Displaced Myanmar Citizens [Rohingyas] at the Secretariat.

To prevent any mischief inside the camp, the authorities will increase patrolling, check posts, and intelligence surveillance, he said.

“We will take measures so that no one of the ARSA or the Arakan Army can enter Rohingya camps. The army will be present during the drive if necessary,” said the home boss.

“Barbed wire fences, watch towers and regular patrols are in place to prevent Rohingyas from coming out of the camp. They will be strengthened.

“I will give instructions to keep the BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) in a more alert state in the border areas. The BGB will be strengthened at the Myanmar border so that new Myanmar citizens cannot enter Bangladesh.”

He said that discussions have been held to speed up the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis and send them back to their own country.

The health of the Rohingyas and various issues including birth control were also discussed, he said.
