Russian Senator: Free delivery of weapons to Afghan forces to continue

A top Russian senator has said Moscow will continue with the free delivery of weapons to the Afghan national security forces in a bid to assist Afghanistan in fight against the emerging threat of terrorist groups, including the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to support Afghanistan during a meeting with her Afghan counterpart Fazal Hadi Muslimyar.

According to the local media reports, the Russian senator has also said that Moscow will ill continue to closely observe the current situation in Afghanistan and will not ignore the recent rise in activity of Taliban fighter.

According to Matviyenko, Moscow’s concerns have escalated amid deteriorating security situation in northern and northeastern parts of the country, specifically the northern Kunduz and northeastern Badakhshan province.

Welcoming Kabul’s decision to modernize the Afghan Air Force with the purchase of Russian-made gunship helicopters, Matviyenko said Russia remains committed to help Afghanistan in training military and police personnel, besides continuing delivery of weapons and ammunition.

Muslimyar hailed Russia for assisting Afghanistan in fight against terrorism and insisted that terrorism is a common threat for all nations and must be opposed with a joint effort.
