Russia Invites Acting FM Muttaqi to Upcoming Moscow Format on Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati in Khaama Press online, July 16, 2023
Ambassador Zhirnov invited Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, to participate in the upcoming meeting of the Moscow format on Afghanistan.

According to a statement from the Ministry, the Russian envoy in Kabul briefed Muttaqi on the upcoming Moscow format meeting on Afghanistan.

The Moscow format is one of many forums on Afghanistan, which started before the Taliban took control of Kabul, and the next meeting is scheduled to be held in October.

For his part, Muttaqi thanked Russian Ambassador for the invitation and asked facilitation of Russian visas for Afghanistan nationals so that business people could travel to the country without any concerns.

The Moscow Format Consultation is a regional platform in Afghanistan; it was established in 2017 and brought together the special envoys of Russia, Afghanistan, India, Iran, China, and Pakistan.

Its duties include establishing peace, ensuring regional security, and assisting in political reconciliation between the Taliban and the Kabul administration, which was later supported by the international community. Due to its national interests and concerns in Afghanistan, particularly concerning two crucial problems, Moscow assumed the initiative in this process.

The first concern was the possible dangers posed by the escalating unrest, violence, and extremism in Afghanistan and the rest of Central Asia.

Critics also say that Afghan representatives of human rights and women’s rights advocates have been included in this meeting to express the people’s aspirations.
