Rouhani urges quick action on Pak-Iran deals:report in The Nation, Aug 29, 2016

Tehran – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for closer cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad in all areas and stressed the need to quickly implement the agreements previously signed between the two neighbouring countries.

Speaking at a Sunday meeting with new Pakistani Ambassador to Tehran Asif Ali Khan Durrani, President Rouhani said rapid implementation of the deals is necessary for closer economic cooperation between the two countries.

“Iran and Pakistan with their common interests and objectives have always been regarded as one another’s strategic depth,” he noted.

Rouhani further emphasised that Tehran welcomes promotion of relations with Islamabad in all spheres, economy in particular.

Rouhani also referred to terrorist activities that have no commitment to any Islamic, ethical or humanistic principles, and called for closer joint cooperation with Pakistan for providing security at the borders and across the region; “combating terrorist groups is not an easy task, but our belief is that there is the will and adequate power in the Pakistani army and military forces to fight the terrorists,” Rouhani said.

Rouhani further highlighted the many cultural commonalities between Iranian and Pakistani nations, calling for more cooperation in cultural, academic and scientific fields.

The newly-appointed Pakistani envoy, for his part, maintained that Tehran and Islamabad’s strategic cooperation has been well revealed during difficult times, saying the two countries’ commercial and economic relations should improve to the level of political ties.

He also expressed his country’s readiness to expand cooperation with Iran in all areas, including the fight against terrorism.

The Pakistani diplomat, for his part, highlighted the “strategic cooperation” between the two friendly countries in hard times and called for better economic and trade relations at the same level of the political ties.

Ambassador Durrani presented his credentials to President Rouhani, who expressed warm sentiments for the people and Government of Pakistan.

During the tenure of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the Iranian President said that the relations between Pakistan and Iran had strengthened.

He recalled that his recent visit to Pakistan fondly. Ambassador Durrani said that Pakistan considered Iran as a brotherly Islamic country.

The Government of Pakistan, he said, was working seriously to implement the decisions reached during the visit of President Rouhani to Pakistan.

He also expressed confidence that the two countries would work together in the areas of mutual interests, especially for enhancing economic cooperation.
