report in Khaama Press online, Dec 2, 2023
The U.S. Department of State, in its annual report on global terrorism, has stated that the efforts of the Taliban administration to prevent the activities of terrorist groups are not clear, and some elements of regional extremist groups are still active in the region.
The annual report by the department, released on Friday, reveals that ISIS-Khorasan branch attacks in Afghanistan, primarily targeting civilians, continue unabated.
Clearly, this report mentions two terrorist groups that are active in Afghanistan. One is the ISIS-Khorasan branch, which the Taliban regime refers to as “Khawarij,” and the other is Al-Qaeda, for which the Taliban administration has not clearly articulated its stance.
In this report, it is stated that despite Al-Qaeda’s presence in Afghanistan and affiliated groups in the Indian subcontinent, they still do not have the capability to organize and carry out attacks from Afghanistan to the west.
The U.S. Department of State, in its report, mentions several cross-border attacks by ISIS into Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, stating that the group had intentions to target the west as well.
It is worth noting that according to regional reports from Afghanistan, more than 20 terrorist groups are active in the country, which is a major concern for regional countries regarding Afghanistan.
The Taliban officials have not provided any comments on this report so far.
