Rampant corruption: G-B PPP leaders slam chief minister

By Shabbir Mir in The Express Tribune, March 9th, 2017.
GILGIT: The regional leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has accused Gilgit-Baltistan’s Chief Minister Hafeezur Rehman of flouting merit while making appointments.

The party further alleged that the chief secretary and inspector general of police were acting as the chief minister’s facilitators.

“There is rampant corruption in every department and ironically the chief secretary and IGP are facilitating him instead of ensuring the rule of law,” said PPP’s regional president Amjad Hussain while addressing a news conference at the Gilgit Press Club on Wednesday.

Flanked by senior PPP politicians such as Jamil Ahmed, Sadia Danish, and Bashir Ahmed, Hussain claimed that at least 40 men had been appointed in the police recently whose names were not on the merit list.

He further alleged that Rehman had been appointing his supporters while ignoring deserving candidates.

“Likewise, contracts are being awarded to close relatives by passing laws,” said Hussain, while claiming that they had proof of the corruption committed.

He added that the departments who were supposed to act against corruption were themselves involved in it and were acting as mouthpiece for the chief minister.

“We are confused whom to approach to stop this corruption,” he said, urging the army to play its role in stopping the malpractice.

Jamil Ahmed, whose is the vice president of PPP in the region, said schedule –IV was being misused to gag political opponents.

“Members of banned outfits are roaming freely while politicians are being included in schedule -IV,” he claimed. Moreover, he said that locals are being deprived of their land by declaring it public property.

The PPP leaders threatened to lay a siege to the chief secretary’s office next week if he fails to act in accordance with law.

When contacted, G-B government’s official spokesman Faizullah Faraq dismissed the allegations, saying “it was an attempt to score political points.”https://tribune.com.pk/story/1350056/rampant-corruption-g-b-ppp-leaders-slam-chief-minister/
