Qatar PM And US Security Advisor Discuss Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati in Khaama Press online, July 18, 2023
Qatar Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, had a phone on Monday and discussed the need for continued humanitarian support for the people of Afghanistan.

According to a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation, issues of regional and international interests, and the recent development in Afghanistan among the topics.

The statement emphasized the critical need for ongoing humanitarian assistance to be provided to the Afghan people, underlining how crucial it is to meet their urgent needs during these turbulent times.

Meanwhile, the two parties also discussed bilateral cooperation, their strategic partnership, and several regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the Iranian nuclear deal, the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, and recent development in Lebanon.

Qatar has supported the negotiation between the Taliban and the US in Doha, which has led to the withdrawal of foreign troops.

Earlier in May, the Qatari Prime Minister met the Taliban supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, in the southern province of Kandahar and discussed several topics, including girls’ education, employment and healthcare.

Since the Taliban took control of the country, they imposed suppressive policies which barred women from going to secondary school, universities and employment with aid agencies.
