Protest held against police brutality

Report in Dawn, 10 Dec 2020
NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Family members of a victim, who was found bludgeoned to death in a police lockup, supporters and community fellows took out a motor rally from Tharushah to Naushahro Feroze, covering a distance of 11km, to register protest against police brutality on Wednesday.

The protesters in cars and on motorcycles led by Sajjad Ali Memon and Mahtab Ali Memon, brothers of the victim, Azhar Memon, told journalists that police arrested their brother on “bogus charges” and then demanded huge bribe for his release. When they refused to pay the bribe, police tortured their brother to death inside the lockup, they said.

They rejected the police claim that their brother was killed by a suspect Mehrab Solangi in the lockup after a scuffle.

They said that suspect Mehrab had confided to them that in reality police had killed Azhar and the officials were now pressurising him to own the crime. In return, they had promised to pay Rs500,000 to his family, they quoted him as saying.
